With cold and flu season rapidly approaching, many of you are asking what you can have on hand to help you stay well all winter long.
I believe in preventive strategies that come from nature to help improve our own body’s ability to fight off viruses. Not drugs that merely suppress symptoms.
~ Besides eating foods that are known for their anti-viral and immune boosting properties such as garlic, onions, oregano, ginger, holy basil and turmeric; I like to keep my natural medicine cabinet stocked with specific supplements, herbs and essential oils to give me an added level of protection.
I’ve put together a list in this post of some of my favorite go to products I keep on hand. To purchase any of my favorite products in this post just visit my Virtual Dispensary by clicking the icon here:
Flu & Cold Prevention Strategy – avoid getting sick!
First and foremost, washing of the hands after each contact is of utmost importance. This means washing your hands after you have touched things in public where others most likely have touched and spread their germs. Using a essential oil based hand sanitizer (not one with Triclosan) is also not a bad idea, but overusing a hand sanitizer will dry your hands out too much, so use wisely and when most needed.
If you live with a loved one that is sick, it’s always best to sleep in a separate room, especially if they are coughing all night (unless you want to get sick as well). Of course, many times it’s hard to avoid people that are sick around us.
I love essential oils!
An atomizer with essential oil of Eucalyptus. Lavender, Clove, Rosemary and Thyme can help sterilize the air of viruses traveling in droplets. Other oils that help keep immunity strong are Frankincense, Thujanol, Tea Tree and of course Oregano. Two essential oil blends I like are called Invincible Immunity and Clear the Air for direct inhalation and diffusing. These oils are very strong so if you do wish to apply to your skin please use only a drop and blend with a carrier oil such as olive or coconut.
Natural Remedies That Help Block Colds & Flu
A strong immune system will help you ward off colds and flu!
First in building a strong immune system is strengthening the GUT flora. The best product (in my opinion) and one I have used for years is called TherBiotic Complete. This is a multi strain, very high dose probiotic I use every day.
If you definitely have the flu (high fever, body aches, respiratory symptoms, cough, congestion, runny nose), then take added Vitamin D3 with K (I like Vitamin D Supreme) at the first signs of fever or flu-like symptoms.
Having my own experience with it, I know these remedies are powerful when used appropriately and sourced from high-quality manufacturers such as the ones I am mentioning in this post .
What I take if I do feel a cold or flu coming on?
At initial onset of feeling a cold or respiratory issue coming on first thing I do is take Quick Defense caps. Because this product has Echinacea root, elderberry and ginger it really packs a punch boosting your body’s own ability to fight off viruses.
If it’s a flu type illness with chills and nausea I find Oscillococcinum to be quite helpful. Taken at the first sign of flu-like symptoms (whether you have the flu or not), this homeopathic remedy can help temper some of the worst symptoms, including the fever and body aches.
Another product I love is this Elderberry Plus syrup by. I really love this product because it combines Elderberry with zinc and Echinacea.
Elderberries are a high antioxidant fruit extract, with anti-infective properties against the flu virus. It actually prevents it from spreading from cell to cell. In studies that looked at its efficacy against influenza strains A & B, Elderberry was found to shorten the duration of the flu from the typical 7 days to 4 days. That’s 3 days less of flu-like symptoms! In comparison, the medications on the market to treat the flu only shorten its duration by a mere 1 day. Combine it with Vitamin D3, and you’ve got a power combo that will get you well faster than any prescription remedy.
And what about colds and sore throats?
Now for the day to day sore throat that may start after exposure to the common cold, I use products like oregano oil and clove oil. Oregano has anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties. So, it is an all-around great anti-infective. Clove oil also has anti-microbial properties. These oils are basically made by these plants as their natural antibiotics. Clove also offers the added benefit of numbing the throat. You can make it into a spray using a spray bottle and mixing with filtered water. You control the strength by the number of drops you add to the spray bottle, but remember these are very potent oils!
Another product I like for sore throats is Echanacea Goldenseal Throat Spray .
How about winter travel?
For travel (especially in airports and airplanes), I like using either one f the essential oil blends mentioned or OregaSpray . The most dreaded one, of course, is the coughing person that sits right next to you and assures you that they are not contagious. Go ahead and spray some OregaSpray oil in the air!
Here’s to getting through cold and flu season unscathed by a big one! May you ward off most colds that come your way, and get through any that you succumb to as fast as possible.
