How do you choose the right detox program???
Here’s a list of things you should consider to help you find a program that’s a good fit.
Anyone’s who’s considered doing a detox program knows there are many types of programs to choose from. In fact, it seems some kind of “new miracle’ detox is being promoted by the Hollywood celebrities and rich and famous almost every month! So how do you cut through the hype and find the right detox for you?
Here’s a list of what I consider essential to consider when choosing the right detox program.
1.) Consider the reasons you want to detox and what you ultimately want to achieve from the process…
There are a variety of reasons people do a detox. Here’s a list of the benefits to get you started:
- Improved digestion
- Reduced aches and pains
- Clearer skin
- More energy
- Improved sex drive
- Better sleep
- Clearer thinking
- Weight loss
- Reduce cravings
- Decrease inflammation
- Change/improve your dietary & lifestyle change
As a clinician I use detoxification programs with my clients to help them resolve chronic health conditions such as food intolerance’s, yeast overgrowth, skin conditions, neurological and behavioral conditions like ADHD and depression as well as many digestive conditions. Detoxification, when done safely and correctly, can also help reduce chronic pain, improve sleep and ease you into releasing unwanted weight.
2) Choose a program that fits your unique lifestyle…
Next, look at how the detox program is structured and see if it meets your benefit objectives. Consider how restrictive you are ready and willing to be during a detox.
For example if you are considering a raw detox you would want to be certain this is a realistic change you’d be able to make. Consider the preparation time involved in shopping and preparing raw foods. Are you going to need to purchase special kitchen equipment? And if you are living in a colder climate this type of program might be easier to maintain during the warmer months of the year.
If you’re considering a juice or liquid based detox will what you ingest be satisfying and contain the right balance of nutrients for you?
~I have found most of my clients do very well with a whole food based detox program because it allows more flexibility and is easier to incorporate into most people’s lifestyle.
3) The dietary change question…
Just taking any kind of detox product without changing your diet is counter-productive to health. It simply makes no sense to even start a detox if you continue to eat the same way as before! Dietary changes are essential. What this means is that you should be removing un-supportive and non-food from your diet and adding restorative, whole foods that support your health during the detox process.
You’ll also want to consider if the program you’re considering provide dietary change guidelines, recipes or recommended shopping lists?
4) Consider the duration of the detox program carefully….
Some detoxes claim you’ll only need 3 days others 14 and others 30 days. Determining which length is best for you is also part of what you want to accomplish.
For example, if your goal is fast weight loss for a party you might be tempted to go for a short 3 day program. I caution against these types of programs for a few reasons. First, is safety; because they are so short, this kind of detox presents inherent dangers for most people. Our bodies are simply too overloaded with toxins to be able to handle pushing them through the liver so quickly. The vast majority of people simply do not do well on these short programs and many feel much worse than before they started and this can even be dangerous.
If your goal is to shift to a healthier lifestyle and improve your digestion, increase energy and have less inflammation, you will need to be on a detox for two weeks to 30 days.
5) Safety and supplementation considerations…
Evaluating the safety (and potential effectiveness) needs to be done by considering all the above plus your current health status. If you have a compromised immune system or are in a highly stressed or otherwise weakened state of health doing a detox has the potential to be dangerous to your health.
Supportive supplements for both the liver and gall bladder are very important whenever you are asking your body to remove toxins. Support can come from herbs or specific nutrients or a combination of both.
When done properly a detoxification program can help support good health by improving digestion and strengthen your immune system. If done improperly, a detox can actually make an already weakened body worse. That’s why it is so important to choose your detox program wisely.
It can be difficult if not impossible for most people to determine how to compare various programs to decide which program is a good fit for their unique bio-individuality. And, this is why it is not only helpful but much safer and more effective to work with a trained clinician to guide you through the program safely…
~ Most DIY programs simply do not offer the kind of personal support most people require and this is frequently why they are disappointed in their results.
